Almost inevitably, it will try to completely take over its new owner. Friedman, A Mind of Its Own: A Cultural History of the Penis (New York: Penguin Books, 2001) 106-07. Private property is the basic category of civilization, and it is through inheritance that private property is passed on, thus creating its own history of civilization. And now half of all such ruminations – the depressing, anxiety-ridden half – have been collected into a book called Impotence: A Cultural History, by Angus McLaren. The other has yet to be identified under the microscope, though its autonomy and capriciousness have been thoroughly documented down through the centuries. A Mind of Its Own, by David Friedman, traces the history of how western culture has viewed the penis. It starts with the witch hunts and ancient Greece and Rome and follows through until the modern era. I hope this book is better than "A Mind of Its Own," which was billed as a cultural history of the penis but turned out to mostly be a cultural history of dudes castrating one another en masse. A transplanted limb that often grants the bearer additional powers/abilities but has a mind of its own (usually, the original owner's).
